The Black Keys “Gold On The Ceiling”

Music Video

One of my first professional gigs, the official music video for the 2X-Platinum-selling single off the Grammy-award winning El Camino album.

Fun tea I can spill now cause it’s already on the Wikipedia page, so who cares: I indirectly got this break-through job because of Harmony Korine (Spring Breakers, Gummo). He had been hired initially to do the music video for this song, and turned in something that was not only the most Harmony Korine music video you can imagine, but only used something like half of the actual song. Needless to say, Someone Up Top Who Had Marketing To Consider – I won’t speculate on who, or at what level – was not into it. So in an effort to salvage something for their upcoming, major single release, they turned to director (and my employer) Reid Long, who was already on the road with The Black Keys shooting behind-the-scenes and tour footage, to see if he could maybe make something else with what he’d been shooting. So Reid set me to the task of cutting while he was on the road, and he’d bring back footage to me, then go back out on the road, and back and forth like that over a very short deadline, resulting in this video – which had its world-premiere on MTV and has reached over 84 Million Views on Youtube, as well as had the happy result of opening some editing doors for me.

And don’t worry: they still released the Harmony Korine video. And it is everything you would hope for/fear from Trash-Humpers-era Harmony Korine.
